On July 17, 2025, the Chicago City Council unanimously passed a resolution recognizing Doug Bruno, the esteemed Hall of Fame coach of the DePaul women's basketball team, for his extensive contributions to women's sports and the city of Chicago. The resolution highlights Bruno's significant legacy in basketball, his steadfast support for women's athletics, and the transformative influence he has had on countless athletes throughout his career.
A Chicago native, Bruno began his journey at DePaul as a student-athlete in 1969 before becoming the head coach of the women's program in 1976, returning in 1988 to lead the team for nearly 40 years. Under his guidance, the Blue Demons achieved remarkable success, including 786 victories and participation in 25 NCAA tournaments.
